LADIES' GOLF TOURNEY,
(Special to the "Evening Post.") NELSON, May 9. The Nelson provincial ladies' golf championships are being played in perfect weather. The links are in good condition and some interesting play has resulted. The .following eight qualified for the championship:—Miss Betts, 89, 85—174; Mrs. Crombie (Hutt), 88, 88—176; Mrs. Dodson, 90, 87—177; Mrs. Mackillop (Christchurch), 91, 87 —178; Mrs. Miller, 88, 94—182; Mrs. Topliss, 94, 89-t183; Mrs. Cock, 89, 95—184; Miss Turton, 93, 94—187. The following qualified for the Tasman Handicap:—Mrs. Goodman, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Milner, Mrs. Jennings, Miss Davies, Mrs. McMoreland, Miss Lucas, Miss Gavin. CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY. The first two rounds of the championship were played today with the following results:—First round: Miss Betts beat Miss Turton, 6 and 5; Mrs. Mackillop beat Mrs. Topliss, 4 and 3; Mrs. Miller beat Mrs. Dodson, at the 19th; Mrs. Crombie beat Mrs. Cock, 6 and 5. Second round. Mrs. Mackillop beat Miss Betts, 4 and ?;, Mrs. Crombie beat Mrs. Miller, 4 and 2. The final, between the Hutt and Christchurch representatives, will be played tomorrow. The first round of the Tasman Handicap resulted:—Mrs. Green beat; Mrs. Goodman, 4 and 2; Mrs. Milner beat Mrs. Jennings, 1 up; Mrs. McMoreland beat Miss Davis, 5 and 4; Miss Lucas beat Miss Gavin, 3 and 1. ... A handicap medal round, was won by Mrs. Miller, 88, 16—72, in the senior division; Miss Betts returned the next best card, 89, 16—73. Mrs. Mitchelt 107, 31 —76, won the junior division. Mr. G. L. Page, the newly 'elected Mayor of Nelson; was born in Staffor* shire, England, but has spent most oe his life in Nelson, where:he.has bee% in business for a long period/ An e» Rugby and cricket representativ* player, Mr. Page has always.been 4 keen worker in youth, movements and was for years a director of the V.M.C.A. He was first chairman of the Friendly Society Dispensary-Board and of the Starr-Bowkett Society. After serving on the Nelson Licensing Committee for several years' Mr. Page "was elected to the City Council six years ago, during which period he has been chairman of the local Unemployment Committee for three years and president of the Smith Family since its inception.
