THE NELSON FIXTURE

OPENING DAY TOMORROW

FORM HORSES ENGAGED

The executive o£ the Kelson Jockey Club is makiug earnest endeavours to popularise their race meeting, to be held tomorrow and on Monday, and a special inducement by way of excursion fares and free admission to the course is offered Wellington and other visiting sportsmen. It is to be hoped that this move will be rewarded by a large attendance. The course is said to be in excellent order for this time of the year, and will provide good going. The fields are quite good, although they are rather complicated m the way of double acceptances. The betting will be conducted ou the old system. A review of the card follows:— 12.30 NOVICE STAKES, £G0; fixed weights; 5 furlongs. Impossible ' Arrowin Isaacs Copenna This event is for maidens at time of starting, and the same condition pertains for the second day. Thus Sundancer and Zionist are not eligible, ,so the field will be very .small. From what has been seen and heard of the maidens engaged the prospects of Copenna and Arrowin would seem to be the best. 1.10 HOPE HACK HANDICAP, £70; 0 furlongs. Kalmuck .... 8 9 Margaret Hose 7 9 Pukeko 8 6 Imasurvey ... 7 9 Pegged Exchange 8 3 Zionist 7 9 Theatln .... 710 Copenna ... 7 9 Gayflre 7 10 If all the acceptors go to the post it will be a splendid race, for quite good hack class is represented. Pukeko won at Kiverton last month, and appears to be on the up-grade, while Kalmuck at his best would pc hard to beat. Pegged Exchange is nicely placed and will be produced fit and well, which suggests a fine chance. Theatin and Gayfire should show up, and Margaret Rose and Imasurvey are not out' of it, the former particularly. Pukeko and Pegged Exchange appeal most. 1.50 NELSON CUP, £150; IV4 miles.. Might 9 8 Bevlslon ... 1 2 Walton Park . 813 Slsterlna .... 7 0 Korero .... 712 Coomassle ... 7 0 Mlladl 7.8.. The ' well-performed and Trenthamtrained Might has1 a solid weight in this, the principal event on the programme, but as the opposition is not over-strong he must be given a first-rate chance. As soon as Tie finishes racing on this circuit he may be taken north to the Te Kuiti and Great Northern Meetings. Walton Park was a winner the middle day at Riverton, and he is an improving performer. However, within 91b of Might he has a difficult task ahead of him.. Korero is susceptible to improvement upon recent efforts, and one,has not quite forgotten his surprising third placing in the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccartou. Miladi sticks' on, and will find scope for. this asset here, while Revision too can stay even if not particularly brilliant. Sisterina and Coomassie complete a-fine field of its kind, in which the prime fancies. are. .Might and Walton Park. 2.30 lAUUNA HACK HANDICAP, £80; ? furlongs. • Zetes B'B Rothen ...... 7 7 Hose Val ... 8 8 Gayflro 7 R Master Beynard 712 lmasurvey ..70 Vlnco 7.11 Pawky ...... 7 0 .Chaste 710 Pharaoh .... 7 0 • A nice field of hacks will line up for this event, with the highly-priced Zetes sharing topweight honours with Rose Val. Both are recent winners. Master Reynard is capable of a good deal of improvement on late form, while Vinco will be ideally suited by this distance, giving him time to find his feet. Chaste was a winner' at Tauherenikau last month, and there are possibilities about Rothen, Gayfire, imasurvey, and Pawky. The issue is left to Vinco and Chaste. 3.10, STEWARDS' HANDICAP, £100: 6 furlong.' Mlladl 8 9 Revision ... t 6 Korero 8 8 Bon Jray ... 1 5 Kozan 8 6 • Pharaoh .... TO Haulbowline .. 7 13 Kozan would only require to be back to his fornr of a couple, of winters ago to win this, and even now. he may be capable of putting out the little bit extra that counts at the end of a race, Miladi and Korero may be better fancied in the longer race earlier in the day, but then the opposition is not. strong, outside of Haulbowjme, who does not seem to be able to reproduce that, form which made him popular at Riccarton last year. Bott Tray and Revision are others with prospects. Kozan and Haulbowline are form horses. 3.-50 ;' '•■■ ' ■ . .ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP, £70: 6 ' furlongs. Kiliiuek ■.;.*,■ 8 5 Imasurvev .. 7 0 Pegged Exchange 713 Impossible ... 70 Bon Tray ... 7 12 Pawky 7 0 Dollar Bill .... 710 Zionist ..... 7 0 Gayflre ' .... 7. 5 Copenna ...1 c Margaret Eose 7 0 _ With one exception, the eleven engaged in-this race ate in earlier, events so the composition of the field ia not likely to be kM&wn till close to .starting time. The fresh horse-is' Dollar. Bill, also a winner at-Riverton .at Easter..and a very likely sort of hack for this event. Previous form ?, £ .the, other? will give a clue as to their chances, but Dollar-Bill and Pegged Exchange read best. in the interim. 4^30 '' - WAIMBA HANDICAP, £90; 1 mile. .£orej°. ...... 8 12. Sislerlria" .... 7 0 Mlladl ...... slO Coomassle ..79 Bevlslon ... 710 Rothen ..... 7 9 Rose Val ... 7 10 ~ Tn| position is much more complicated in the fanal event tomorrow, for all are engaged earlier, and there ia a prospect of the field fining down even more. The distance will suit Korero, Miladi, and Rose Val very well, and,,they may be the latest f? m hoi ses by t]ie time the starter sends them off.
