THE "SHIRE" SYSTEM
MR. W; • NASH'S CRITICISM
Mr. Walter Nash, MP., whilst acting as chairman of the meeting of Labour candidates at Lower Hutt, pointed out the dangers of reiritroducing the old system of Provihcial Government if the shire systejrn, as proposed,by the Legion, was supported.
The first procedure, in connection with reducing overlapping and waste was,to.investigate the activities of all the local authorities in the limited area of the Valley," the River' Board, PpVer Board, Gas Board, and Borough Councils.. Any scheme which for the alleged purpose, of efficiency tended to destroy the old associations arid traditions of places, like Petone and Lower Hutt. should be given lengthy- and careful consideration before it was introduced and in any case the electors of each area should have .the right to vote on any proposal before its adoption., !.;:: ■. •' .■■■■'.■ •...•■■'.. ....■■
