STATEMENT BY MAYOR

WRONG IMPRESSION GIVEN

A report of the discussion at the City Council meeting, published this morning, did not state the position at all clearly, said the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, today, and he was afraid that a wrong impression might therefore have been created.

"It was reported that I did not know that the Mission was in need of funds " said Mr. Hislop. "That is, of course quite incorrect. I knew, and have known for. a long time, that the Mission in need of funds, and I have from time to time endeavoured to help in,getting assistance, but I was not aware until yesterday that the''Mission authorities had, as was stated at the council meeting, decided to close the shelter as from Wednesday next And I am informed by the controlling committee that this decision was not even definite, as a further meeting is to take place today to decide finally what course is to be followed. TEMPORARY ARRANGEMENTS MADE.

"I am informed that criticism has been directed at me on the assumption that I did not know that the Mission was hard up. If so, it is unfair' criticism. As soon as the position was made known, to me I at once offered to •do anything ■ I could to help- and as a consequence a meeting was held this morning of representatives of the Mission, the , bank, and myself,, at which I made certain proposals, which were adopted, to enable the Mission to carry on for the time.being so that we can have an opportunity of making a further drive for funds to ensure its permanent carrying on. "I am asked by the Mission authorities to correct the statement made by Councillor Semple yesterday when he said that cheques of the Mission drawn on the barik had been dishonoured" continued Mr. Hislop. 'This statement is entirely, incorrect, and the Mission authorities as well as the bank inform me that no cheque has been dishonoured." .
