SECOND DAY HOPES

THE EGMONT MEETING

FRESH HORSES ON MONDAY

Several fresh horses may come in on the second day at Hawera, where the Egniont Racing Club was to launch today the jumping season proper. The club has been very fortunate indeed in being able to seize upon the King's Jubilee holiday for its second aay. On such an occasion the ■weather w.ould only require to be on its best behaviour for the club to enjoy a day reminiscent" of better times.

There is a new race included on Mon- .'• day's programme, the. Coronation Stakes, this being for maidens at time' of stavt-.-ing, for two-year-olds and upwards, tlw older division conceding the youngsters 101b, and in • view of the fact that two-year-olds at .this time of the year are on the threshold of a new year this allowance should bring them together.' In . Monday's Coronation Stakes at ■Hawera there is n"b two-year-old of outstanding merit. Chalice was taken to Ellershe and Avondale from Bulls and this youngster went fair .races there, the form being perhaps good enough for the opposition .Jri Monday's event. Another two-year-old in the Awapuni-trained Hilton Gorse secured a third placing at Pahiu tua, but as this youngster was ten lengths ■ away, third, behind Finnesko and Romp ■: Along, considerable improvement will be necessary to. beat Chalice and the best of the older horses, who may be Caen, Sport.mg Song, and Lady Eka. Auckland form certainly points to Chalice. This Coronation Stakes is for maidens at time of starting, so that rules out the northerner Try Luck, who won-a double at the Bay o£ Plenty Meeting two years ago. ;-. . ■ . There may not be any fresh horses produced in the hurdle race on Monday, Dut one would expect a jumper like King Win 'to, make considerable improvement if he ! was produced today, for previous to this meeting he had not raced since Christmas. So, too, would Lucidus, who had but one run over the sticks previous to today, fin ishing fourth at Avondale. However, Lucidus is also engaged in the sprint on Monday, so it remains to be seen which event he is to take on. REAPPEARANCE OF RIOTOUS. It is probable that there will be some blood in the Adamson Steeplechase on Monday, the distance of which is two ' miles, half a mile shorter than today's contest.. Air Laddie was not paid up for ..today's hurdles, but he was entered both for this and the steeplechase today, suggesting that his owner has intention of facing him over country this winter. If he is produced on Monday, and such is possible, his showing will be of interest. An-interesting entrant for; the steeple.chase is the veteran Waitaunaha, who ai 13 years of age must be the daddy of the 'field. A few seasons back' he was a goo.l performer over country and one remembers him showing up in the minor cla^s at Trentham. Just to sho\v that he is not a spent light, Waitaunaha gave a good display over the schooling fences at H.iwera a few days ago. but reports receive'; this morning indicate that the old. fellow has broken down badly and will not rate again. , ■■ The advent of Riotous among the 'chasers is an event that one may be forgiven for anticipating with relish, for this fine jumper had an excellent record last winter, although his early successes carried him high in the weights and made his tasks in.the big.'chases very difficult. If he is Eroduced on Monday he would be hard t) eat, for this stable has the happy knack of. being able to, win first .up, particularly ■with its. jumpers; So if Riotous is on hand on Monday he will be the horse the others have to beat, and he will prob-. ably run, seeing that Tudor was not enter ed; for the second day.. BIG HACK CUP FIELD. One of the most attractive of races on Monday will be the King's Jubilee Hatk ,Cup,. run over eight and a half furlongs, a race that will require early brilliance, seeing that there is a little, over half a 'furlong of a straight rjun going out of the. straight. There were 42 entries and a field of 20 is expected. It is known.jthat quite a few'hacks are being reserved for thisf event, but one that is not is the Trentham-trained Darecourt, who was to contest the hack sprint today. That distance may prove a trifle short for him, but the Hack Cup.will suit him nicely. Ho has only to get a run to be difficult to head off. •••■"' It is not kflown whether Jubilee Song will be at the meeting, but it is probable , that he, too, will line up for this Hack Cup. He. was not a lucky runner in a shnihyr race at Marton and so an improved effort can be expected on Monaay.'He: is a good sort and if he can keep out of bother with his. stiff impost he seems p. likely, place-getter. Tahuranßi and Sir-oha, both engaged in today's prin, cipal flat event, are among the entrants, and "they top will be "well up in the Weights if they get into the money this afternoon. Apart "from this Sirona would be a very likely prospect indeed. Thenthere..is. the. improving Ingenuity, who ie Dot engaged today. The strongest hand in one stable appearß to be held by J. Cathro, who has three good staying hacks engaged, in Engi. ■Dark Marble, and Huskie. and it is veri' likely that he'will have'one to represent him in this event. It may be the firstnamed,- after his runaway win.last Monday at Avondale, where he defeated a useful field of moderate open seven furlongs performers and some good hacks. That effort,.was very impressive, and it was noi surprising, to-recall that Engi is include:! among the Cornwall Handicap entrants. If taken to Hawera it will take a lot of weight to stop this.hack. Either. Daek Marble or Huskie would also make a bold showing, : but one would pick the stable to rely .on its best, Engi. It looks as if the newcomers will play the most prominent part in the decision of the Jubilee Hack Cup, with Engi preferred over Dare.court, Jubilee Song, and Sirona. if ■ the last-named does not win today. This filly is not big and so may got be up to weight. The two principal flat races on Monday, the Davidson Handicap and the Mokoia ' Handicap,, may be composed of the same material, so that the first day's running ought to be followed. However, . Lady. Kyra is a possibility if she lines up, for she is in both events. Golden Hair is i« . the' middle-distance race, but one will • want to see her show form before recommending her, even in this instance, where the class is well within her range..
