SCARF AND SKI GLOVES

A woollen scarf and ski gloves for wear under waterproof gloves are such necessary accessories for a cosy snow wear outfit. These shown here are knitted in red and white to match the cardigan jumper, directions lor making which appeared last week. Next week directions will be given fox making snow socks and a snow cap. THE SCARF. Material required: Two ounces each o£ white and bright red brush wool, one pair No. 9 needles, pointed hotli ends. DIRECTIONS. Half of this scarf is in red striped in white and half in white striped in red, the join coming at centre back of neck. Using the red wool, cast on 36 eitches, knit the first row into the, back of these stitches, and then work on in pattern as follows: — These eight rows form pattern. Ist row: * Knit 3, make a spot, i.e. (knit next stitch, put it back on left needle, knit it again,, but leave on left needle), as though casting on. Cast on three more

stitches (five loops now on left needle). Now slip 4th loop over sth, 3rd over sth, 2nd over sth, and finally Ist over sth. Only sth now remains; knit this.'Repeat from * to elid of row. '

2nd row: Purl with red wool. , 3rd row: Knit, using white wooL 4th row: Purl, using red wool. : sth; row: Knit 1, * make spot as before, knit 3, repeat from * to end of row, using red wool.

6th row: Purl, using red wool. 7th row;: Knit, using white wool. Bth row: Purl,- using red wool. ' Repeat these eight rows throughout. Knit on in this way for 10 inches, then start decreasing by knitting 2 together at beginning and cud of every 7th' row, till there are only 22 stitches left on, the needle. ■ :

Knit on without shaping for a further five inches and then; change to white wool striped in red and do another five inches; the work should now measure 25 inches. Now start increasing by making one stitch nfc beginning and end of every 7th row till there are 36 stitsehes on again. Then knit without shaping'for 10 inches. Cast off. Work two rows of double crochet all round the scarf, usiwi red wool on the red end and .white on the white end. This will keep the soarf from rolling. *SKJ GLOVES. Measurement: Size 7. - : ; Materials required: Tw,o ounces each of white 4-ply super and red brush wool, four No. 11 needles and four No. 10, pointed both ends, DIRECTIONS. Using the four No. 10's'and white wool, cast on 68 stitches, 24, 24, and 20 on the three needles., Do not knit.into the backs of these.. Work ia stocking stitch, two rows white, then two red and one white, and then, usiwj ft spare needle, pick up the cast on ecise, a few stitches at a time is easiest, fold up on the inside of needles (the wrong side) and knit 2 together all round to make a rolled edge, taking one stitch from the ordinary needle and one from the spare needle together each time. Using a coloured thread, ,jnark the beginning of the rows., Now. start knobbly stitch, which is done as follows (same as other directions from (1), using red wool):— ist row: Knit 2 together twice • as directions, ■ ■ • •••(".,

Bth row: Purl, using red wool. Work on in this way, repeating from the Ist row till there are eeyen rows of knots. Now work two more rows of knots, omitting to knife 2 together at beginning of 4th aud Ist rows. There will now be 58 stitches on the needles. - ;

Now work two rows white, two rows red, in stocking stitch (all plain).' . The neyt row use white and * knit 3, knit 2 together, repeating from * to end of row, leaving 46 stitches; Work on in white for rest of glove. _" , . ; Do eight rows of single rib (knife 1, purl 1), then .10 rows plain: now start shaping for thumb. This is for left-hand glove. Starting to count from' beginning of row (directly ; above shaping), knit 21, then knit twice into the next two stitches; finish the round and then do two rounds without shaping.

14th row: Knit 21, knit twice into next stitch, knit 2, knit twice into next; Finish row without further • shaping. Make two increases like this every 3rdrow- (the two rows in between are always plain) five times more, each time knife-, ting two more stitches in between the two increases, until there are 13 stitches on thumb. Work four rounds, without shaping. Then put the _13 stitches of thumb on to a, safety pin, now cast on five stitches, join on to other side' of thumh. and work 36 rounds without shaping. Then shape top of hand by dividing the stitches 60 that there are 25 stitches on one needle and 12 and 13 on the other two, seeing that the thumb conies to the left side front. :

Start shaping by knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 19, knit 2 together, knit 1; you will now start on other needle (back of hand), knit 1, knife 2 together, knit 19, knit 2 together, knit 1.

Next row plain. Repeat these two rows, knitting one less stitch in between shaping, as knit 18, 17, etc,, each time, till there are only 13 stitches in between on each side. Then decrease every row till there are. only seven stitches in all each side.

Graft the top off

Pick up the 13 thumb 6titches and six ■where ydu cast on the five. Knit 18 rows plain, and then knit 2 together on each needle, till only three Etitches remain.

Break off wool and using a darning needle run the wool through the stitches and darn the end in.

Make the right-hand glove the. same, but placing the thumb on. other sido.

Enjoyment of the creations of Mr. Walt Disney should be enlightened, if not-increased, by an exhibition at the Leicester Galleries of original working drawings showing how Mickey Mouse cartoons and Silly Symphonies are actually made. As most people know, though Mr. Disney is the "onlie begetter" of his cartoons their production Is a matter of highly organised team work. The Disney studio employs 300 collaborators, and it takes from 7000 to 10,000- separate drawings to turn out a Mickey Mouse or a Silly Symphony. Besides original "-drawings, by Mr. Disney there are photographs illustrating all the different technical processes. Apart from his fertile invention and feeling for the grotesque, Mr. Disney is distinguished as an artist by his ability to make an effective and concentrated summary of his creations. His work ,is a fine example of the adaptation of means to end, _ '
