The impression that .Americans now are genuinely desirous of fostering two-way trade with American countries has been brought back by Mr. Tracy T. Gough, of Christchurch, after a five months' tour in the United States.

He found that American business men were keenly anxious to know which overseas countries would buy from them and what America could buy in return. A tariff board independent of politics and composed of business men -of good type had been set up recently, and it was carefully considering the question of how to encourage trade without doing damage to domestic industries. ■
