RACE TO WELLINGTON

Two of the small coastal ships which trade between here and Hokitika had a race up the coast to Wellington this week, the auxiliary schooner Te Aroha, with a handicap of eight hours in her favour, beating the motor-ship Gael. Prior to their departure from Hokitika last Sunday the captains of the two little vessels agreed to race, the Gael conceding a handicap of six hours, which was later increased to eight. At 12.10 p.m. on Sunday the Gael got under way, followed a few minutes later by the Te Aroha with all sails set. The, wind dropped two hours later, and the rest of the journey was covered under engine power. The Gael arrived here at 4.40 a.m. on Tuesday, and the Te Aroha reached port about six and a half hours later, winning the race by an hour and a half,
