OBITUARY
MR. ANDREW DUNCAN
Mr. Andrew Duncan, who for many years was - well known .in connection with the management of the New Zealand Railways, died suddenly on Thursday at his residence at Cashmere, in his-74th year. Mr. Duncan was. the son of Mr. Robert Duncan, an Ayrshire farmer who was one ■of Canterbury's pioneer settlers. On leaving school, Mr. Duncan, who was born near Christchurch, became a cadet in the New Zealand Railways, and he achieved rapid promotion. He was traffic manager of the Picton and Whangarei districts, then "stationmaster at pamaru, and later was in charge of the Dunedin district when the present King, and Queen, then Duke and Duchess of York, visited New Zealand. Later, as manager of the West Coast Railways, he was particularly successful in his up-to-date methods of organisation, and in 1912 was promoted manager of the Wellington district, and three years later to a similar position in Auckland. He retired from active business in 1922, and went to live at Manurewa, where he .engaged in his hobby of gardening until seven years ago, when he took ■up residence in Cashmere. Mr. Duncan leaves a widow and six daughters, Mrs. R. H. Cowern (Otorohonga), Mrs. Arthur Talbot (Timaru), Mrs. Norman Henderson and Mrs. J. C. W. Gregory (Wellington), Mrs. Keith Mitchell (Dunedin), and Miss Muriel Duncan (Christchurch). ' '
