LA KORRIGANE

SCHOONER REPORTED

ISLAND SOUTH OF SUVA

SUVA, April 10.

The auxiliary cutter Tui Vunilagi arrived at Suva this afternoon. Captain Smith reports that his cutter was lying at anchor at Moala Island, 110 miles east-south-east of Suva on Monday when he saw a schooner approaching the entrance under sail. , As the anchorage was bad with"' coral patches and Captain Smith" did not .wish to foul his own ahchors he proceeded to the entrance in a dinghy and piloted the schooner to an' anchorage. He had not boarded the schooner, and there was no conversation beyond thanks for the pilotage. He observed the name of La Korrigane on the stern of two boats in the davits.

Captain Smith left for , Suva next morning, passing close to -the schooner, on which all appeared well. He observed a bunch of bananas in the rigging, so presumed that the schooner had visited other islands in the Fiji group, or perhaps Tonga. He understood that the schooner was bound for Suva. " ■

Fears for the safety of the schooner were caused by a radio message from the Aorangi on March 3 reporting that she had passed one of the ship's lifeboats with the starboard side stove in, 500 miles, north of Auckland. After some days had gone by without word of the vessel, which was bound for Suva from Russell, the Maui Pomare, which was on her way from Niue to New Zealand, was diverted to make a search. . ~ ■' ■ ■ ; ■ ' , -
