COLLECT SERVICE

(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce is not of the same view as the Wellington Chamber that the "collect" telephone toll service recently inauguratd. by the Post and Telegraph Department is undesirable. The Wellington Chamber suggested in a letter that recipients of "collect" calls were placed in a difficult position, in that where only a small order happened to be involved, the toll charge might be heavy. The facility was open to abuse, and, further, it was felt that the time occupied by the exchange in . communications between caller and called-up might cause delay to others waiting to make a toll connection. \ , Mr. D. Black, chief postmaster, said that the scheme was introduced to help and not hinder business men, and was really an extension of the collect telegram scheme, which had never been objected to. In his opinion the Wellington Chamber had seized on a very minor point to object to. The three months during which the scheme had been in operation was hardly a long enough period in which to judge the worth of the scheme.
