TALK ON THE KAURI
NATIONAL HERITAGE \
An interesting talk ori native ■ flora:. was given at Kauri Park, Blrkdale. b* Miss L. M. Cranwell, botanlsfat\h« Auckland War Memorial Mustum. states the "New Zealand HenM." -
Miss Cranwell suggested that Kauri, Park should be kept entirely, aativi —like a little cameo in all the tbousV ands of acres of settled land. There;, was now so little left of the 4,0My00», acres of Kauri bush in the Auckland?] Province that these small sheltered reserves should be guarded most jealous-*" ly. This was primarily a kauri park;,' Though not king trees, they had' altj the rare beauty of the kauri. Those] remaining were at the interesting stags' of early maturity. A kauri might be said to be mature^ as soon as it bore cones, say,-,when it was over ten feet high, but physical maturity came later, said the. speaker. The great change was therefore,, got between the slender rika pushing up with fellows.through the sheltering manuka and the old giant of -100(1 years, with massive, spreading crown and tall, stately trunk, from which, peeled great slabs of bark, dripping with resin. In the park in which they were «*l sembled there were the young plants"; from last year's seedlings, and there: were middle-aged trees—but not patri*! archs. Probably none of the trees was, 300 years old, so they should still be growing there at least for another 900 years after the projected ■ harbou»l bridge was built. ■ ■•■' ;
Though it has tour wheels, a mldge^ car exhibited in England runs oh onlM two. The tiny machine is balanced like] a motor cycle, but is guided by a steerJ ing wheel instead of handlebars. Two small auxiliary wheels keep the car upright in turning and stopping. The narrow body, equipped with a wind shield; scats two persons. ~~J
