PRESENTED AT LAST

BRITISH MEAT POLICY

PERIOD OF 18 MONTHS

LEVY CUM QUOTA

United Press Association—By 'Electric Telegraph—Copyright.. (Received February 12, 1 p.m.) '■• LONDON, February 11. "Britain hias at last presented the Dominions with her long-term meat policy. It was a full meeting, including Mr. Walter Elliot, Minister; of Agriculture, Mr. J. H. Thomas, Dominions Secretary, Sir, John1 Gilmour, Home Secretary, the Dominion High Commissioners, and Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, Dominions Under-Secretary. Mr. Mac Donald detailed his inquiries in Australia and New Zealand. Each High Commissioner spoke. ■■ No decisions were reached, but the issues were clarified in connection with the long-term policy. Unofficial comment described • the meeting as "cordial" and as having made "good progress." .- It was learned that the policy submitted was broadly based on the White Paper. It proposes eighteen months' operation, and features a levy of Id a lb on foreign and Sd on Dominion imports, plus a slight restriction. Mr. Elliot pointed out that: the longterm policy should not be regarded as British, but as an Empire* policy. He suggested that essentially it was aimed at benefiting- the Dominions in common with other exporters arid home growers, but was riot designed to bolster up inefficient British agriculture |at the Dominions' expense.' The policy was solely concerned with maintaining British agriculture. ■■■■"■ ;■■ ■
