DUNEDIN, This Day. • "Mummy wheat,": which was sown, as an experiment in a Dunedin suburb iiast year, is now harvested, and threshed.- It has produced an almost unbelievable yield; at the rate of 160 bushels to the acre, which is consid-, ered .good enough to warrant a trial on a commercial scale. . ~ • The seed' was grown in India under the direction of the Indian Govern,'ment, and it was from a consignment. "sent'to .England for sale after the Indian authorities had proved the: value ,of the wheat<fpr bread-making that a ■Dunedin man, whose hobby is botany, bought his small parcel. "Mummy wheat" is wheat found in ;the'; ancient Egyptian tombs. Many attempts have been made to grow the grain, in spite of its great age, and «it has • frequently been reported that some of it has germinated. It is ■widely held, however, that the vitality of seeds is limited, and that when "mummy wheat" has been found to grow it is not really ancient grain, • but a. substitute palmed' off on the experimenter,
