DESERTED TO ENLIST
, It was stated .at an Aldershot courtmartial that when -Private William Henry: Bristow, 'twenty-one, of the 2nd Battalion .West ; Yorkshire Regiment, tried to join another, regiment after leaving his own" he was recognised by a recruiting sergeant. Bristow, who was charged with desertion, at first pleaded guilty, but after the Court had heard a statement in mitigation it decided to proceed on a plea of not guilty and reheard the case. Bristow stated, that he ■ had a poor conduct sheet, and realised it would prove an obstacle to his chances of promotion in his own regiment. He decided "to make a fresh start in the Army by reenlisting with the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. After working as : a hotel servant in London he went to Halifax to join the Duke of Wellington's Regiment, but the recruiting sergeant recognised him. The defending officer said it might sound an extraordinary story,' but it was a true one. It was stated that Bristow went away on August 19 and ,was arrested on December "19 -^-
