JUROR'S SYMPATHY
A woman juror's sympathy for a prisoner led to a remarkable incident at Essex Quarter Sessions at Chelmsford.v When-the jury were returning to the box after the luncheon' interval, a woman juror approached a police officer and handed him a brown paper parcel, saying: "Get this to. the female: prisoner." ' The officer told the Clerk of the Court what had happened,, and when the case .was resumed the -officer was ordered into. the witness-box. He was directed by the chairman to open the packet, and it was found, to contain a packet of sweets and a bunch of violets. The chairman asked the woman juror if she had an. explanation, to offer.: The juror said:- "Ifeel very- sorry for her. lam a Christian woman. I just had to doi it." The chairman: "You have been actuated by pity,: but: what you have done is very serious. You must leave the box, but must remain in court." ■ A new juror, a':, man, was empanelled and .the' case proceeded. Several of the' witnesses had- to repeat their evidence. ■ ;- ••'■■:
