As the express from Auckland to Taneatua was crossing the WairOa Hiver, about four miles before -reaching Tanranga, passengers experienced a thrill at seeing a man leap frori the. train into the river. Ho is believed to be Herbert Maxfield, about 25 years of age. Ho got ashoi'O in the vicinity of the Bethlehem Native Pa, and was later seen at Wairoa Pa and Olumoetai. Constables Moore and Audley were advised, and searched the country districts and the town all night unsuccessfully. Maxfield is wanted on charges of breaking, entering, and theft at Tanranga about three years ago, and is believed to have been deported from Australia and to have come back to New Zealand by the Marama on Monday last. Maxikld formerly belonged to Tauranga, and was -declared a habitual criminal some years ago.
