RACING AT WANGANUII

TOMORROW'S OPENING DAY

CUP AGAIN ON PROGRAMME

Useful fields of good betting strength have accepted for the opening day of . the Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting at Wanganui tomorrowrand with all prospects of a continuance of the present fine spell of weather the day's' racing should be most successful. The meeting is being held about two weeks earlier this year than last, owing to a' change of dates with the Egmont Racing Club; and. a feature will be the reinstatement , of the old-established Wanganui- oup, which has not been run - siri'ce 1930, after an unbroken sequence from 1875 till then. The reinstated Cup will now be contested over Hi miles instead of 1% miles as previously. There is foim fiom the holidays, Wel- , lington, and Ashhuist to guide investors, but there is also a considerable infusion of fresh blood, including a few horses v, ho have not preMouUy laced. The betting will be under the single-pool system, with two dividends in fields of live or more runners. The card and prospects are:— 12.0: WESTJIEKE HACK BUItDLES, £110; , 1 mile 4;i furlongs. '.. Adventus .... ID IS Conference .., it Ytlian ...... 10 8 Headland .1. 9 0 Blacksmith .. 10 5 Colossal 9 0 Sir Spear 10 1 Following' his consideiably improved jumping form on the recent TcuaiuLi ■ circuit Ythan .is the likely favourite for the Westmere Hack' Hurdles, but one who is sure to trouble him with half a stone concession in the weights is the Marton hurdle winner Sir Spear, who has revealed good pace 6n the fiat in his latest ■ efforts.' " Headland,; who finished third, at Ashhurst, will have benefited with his two recent races, and Blacksmith catches notice as rather well treated in the weights. A form pair, are Sir Spear and Ythan. 12.40: KAI IWI AIAIDEN, £80; 5 furlongs. Panloff .;... 8 7 hclnar ..... 8 7 Eara ...... 8 7 Truo Measure 8 7 Dawn Princess 8 7 Valmarlno ... 8 7 JUnoa 8 7 Amante .... 8 7 Jlartianess ... 8 7 Lady floarirl . 87 Windscreen .. Pahloffj Eara, Dawn -. Princess, .Windsoreen, and Reipar were in the money during the holidays, and Eara, Windsoreen,. and! Dawn Princess are three who will favour the short distance. .MartianaßS, from L. G. Morris's stable, is dua on her breeding for an improved display of form before long, but eo far her efforts have been disappointing. A favoured tribj may be Windsoreen, Eara, and-Dawa Ptincess. 1.20: JUVENILE HANDICAP, £100; 5 furlongs. T 3 Surprise Item 7 0 Round Up and Lowenberg «re the only ' previous winners engaged in the Juvenile .'Handicap, and they will probably be favourites, with the latter, a winner at Stratford, possibly preferred, as he is ; said to be susceptible, 'to improvement. 'Matrimony and Sergia have place foim ■to date,'but the others have done nothing yet. Good Conduotj a, candidate due to ■have .her first race, is. a half-sister by Grand Knight to Civility, and there may .' be some; worth inv.'her, as her galloping /recently has been pleasing. All foim points to Lowenberg "and Round, Up. 2.5: VICTOBY BACK,JBANDICAP, £100; 1 ;_ ■ -mile and 110. yards. Fersen f 0 Boudoir .... I 8 ;.St. Clara ..-., 8 T Tranquillity . T 0 .Silk 50x...... 8 2. Lady's tUle ..TO ; if Tersen starte.in the Victory Hack <; Handicap he will be a hot favourite, and he should justify the support. On Stiat- ■ ford form Silk Soj; may ( now be better than St. Clara, who. was the final day Tvinner, as there is now 141b difference m iheir weights as compared with that oeeasipri, ■when Silk Sox was also much the' better fancied. The others make no appeal. on- form, though Boudoir is a possible upsetting factor. A favoured pair will be Fersen and Silk Sox.

Midian'a race at Marton will have helped him,-and lie is a good-class horse who comes up I quickly. Wasteland's solidity this sea- : •on may find her preferred to Black Man with his weight, but The Ark and Glenvane jloojc formidable opposition. Golenso, Jubilee Song, and Onewhetu may-be likeliest of the lightweights. ' It is a difficult, issue, but those best supported promise to include MidiaM,:Wai3telaiidi and Glenvane. .-..-.. 3.25: WANGANW CUP,, J .1% miles. T 0 Plateau .... 8 0 , , ■■ Red Manfred represents : the class in the Wanganui Cup, and he is a good form horse who swill be suited by the turning course, as he is a doubtful stayer, though as honest as they are made. Aga Khan, Tiger Gain, and Eminent are'all fit, with Tiger Gain probably the most Jikely to *how improvement on hie latest performance, his eecond to Eminent at 81b wors» terms in the Aehhurst Cup. Should Fer»en'be reserved he" might beat them all. as he seems a natural stayer. These seem tho best of the field, and the ultimate selection may be for Red Manfred and Fersen (or Tiger Gain).
