TROUBLE ON LINER

FIREMEN LEAVE SHIP

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

TIMARU, January 29.

Refusing to go to sea'while one of their number was missing, 15 firemen off the overseas vessel Mamari walked aSDore at Timaru tonight, the vessel eventually sailing without them.

The vessel was timed to sail at 6 o'clock, but at this hour two or three men were missing. The captain decided to give them half an hour's grace, but at 6.30 there, was still one man absent. The captain intimated his intention of sailing, but the firemen walked off the ship in their working clothes. An hour later the men still refused to sail, and the vessel put to sea, leaving the firemen behind. They were- in an awkward predicament, as many of them were scantily clad and had no money for a-night's lodging. The men were eventually taken in at the Saijors' Rest, and it is understood they will be sent to rejoin the vessel at Lyttelton.
