NUNNELEY CASKET MATCH

Canterbury, having successfully chal]en"ed Wellington for- the Wilding Shield, is now concentrating on the corresponding ladies' competition—the ' Nunneley Casket. This competition waß instituted by Miss Kathleen Nunneley, who holds a record which probably will never be approached. She was New Zealand singles champion for thirteen years in. succession! She still takes an active interest in tennis, and in 1929 decided to present all her New Zealand trophies affixed to a kauri casket to the Wellington Association to be challenged for by the various provinces under similar conditions to the. Wilding Shield.

That is, any province wishing to challenge for the trophy nominates a team of four women who will each play two singles and two doubles with the women of the defending zone. . Since its inception the casket has been retained by Wellington which could call on such famous players as Mrs. K. P. Adams, Mrs. H. M. Dykes, Miss D. Nicholls, Miss M. Tracy, who all have their names inscribed on the New Zealand championship roll. Canterbury, however, has been concentrating on capturing the trophy, and is hopeful that the present youthful team will accomplish on Friday and Saturday what their quota, of New Zealand champions, Miss M. Wake, Miss M. Andrew, and Miss M. Spiers, could not do.
