CO-OPERATION
IDEAL IM GOVERNMENT
(By Telegraph.) • (Special to the "Evening Post.")
PUN.EDIN, This. Day. !
At the annual. conference of the New Zealand Master Grocers' Federation tlio president (Mr. W. J. Evans, of Auckland), in his opening remarks, said: —"What we want is men in authority witii ability, men who command respect and. tho confidence of the people. Then there would be cooperation and not onti party trying to discredit the other and to create distrust, but all working for'tho benefit of our fair land; not Labour versus Capital but Labour 'and Capital., They are inseparable and should be joined in brotherhood.
"We are. not .ignorant of the tremendous task whieh the Government of our land is called upon to undertake, but we deplore the undemocratic action on'the part of the Ministry iff'appointing to Cabinet rank any other - than those carrying the hall-mark of the electors. Further, I marvel at the expense incurred by Ministers. In my judgment it is a positive waste. 1 am convinced'that ' the .men taking Cabinet rank should bo able to take the weight of that office and not serve as figureheads, employing t>thers to do the work—a grocer for a grocer's job, not a draper. Speaking ia all charity, I do think that the people of New Zealand should be troated as loyal subjects having reasonably balanced minds.1
"Concerning discussions :in camera Mr. R. Windeyer, K.C., of Sydney, when in Auckland, and speaking of Dominion trade, stressed- the need for greater reciprocity with tho Homeland. He also, in discussing the trade negotiations between New Zealand and.'Australia, said that it was a pity that they had not been conducted in> public. Too many private interests were being served in secret negotiations. It appears that he knew more than he was prepared to say in public, which, I maintain, is a pity."
