OBITUARY

WILLIAM BEACH, SCULLER

1 (Received January 29, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, This Day. The death has occurred,1 at the ago of 84, of William Beach, former world's champion scullor. ■ ' William Beach, retired undefeated champion sculler of the vvoria, was one of the most distinguished scullers the world has>seen. He was distinguished in skill, and courage and sportsman-, ship. The outstanding events in the career of-William,Beach were tho four defeats inflicted upon Edward Hanlan, the remarkable Canadian,- who had twice conquered Ned Trickett and Elias Laycoek. "The first time I met Hanlan," the vetoran related, "was when he> came out to row Trickett, and I' saw what a champion he was. . . . Hanlan and I were fooling about for a match for a good while. He wanted ago for £sffO aside,-but I did not have it. Eventually after some difficulty I got a backing, and we wore matched for £500 aside and the championship of the world. I always think he had an idea he had to meet something pretty rough, for during my race with Trickett about that time Hanlan saw mo put on a spurt. . . . During the time we were training we often had a bit of a brushup, but, of course, neither of us knew whether the other was all out. When we got on tho mark and Hanlan saw me take my singlot off he chipped me about wanting it later on,' but I told him I'd make him take off- his before I finished with him. . . . Hanlan was always a good sport and we were tho best of friends. Of course, we might have a slight argument now and then, but that didn't make any difference to our friendship from first to last."
