SANDERS CUP

HELD BY CANTERBURY

WIN IN FOURTH RACE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) HALF MOON BAY (S'tcwart Island), January 28. By winning tho fourth raco in the Sanders Cup contest, hold in Pater-, son'a Inlet this afternoon, Irene,, the Canterbury boat, retains the trophy. | She was expertly handled, her skipper I giving a masterly exhibition of yacht-, ing tactics. i The morning race was won by the Monica, which was sailed in a splendid fashion. Tho weather conditions had vastly improved. The courso in tho morning was a windward to locward one of three miles, sailed threo times. A triangular course three times round j was decided upon for what proved to j bo the final race. i The Irene, which won oii both Thurs-1 day and Saturday, had an entirely new set of conditions to contend with, but she proved herself to bo equally at' homo .in the lighter breeze. A thrilling finish marked, the raco which gave her the championship, and only tho expert knowledge of her skipper enabled her to .reach the finishing line ■ ahead of the Monica. The Monica was also expertly handled, and throughout was well and capably managed. The Betty, skippered by Mason, did not show up prominently, while the Evelyn, Southland's boat, was never in the race in both morning' and afternoon events. The morning race was sailed in lighter airs. Crews were as follows for tho afternoon race:-1 — Irene: • Sinclair (skipper), May, 'Forman. Monica: McKenzie (skipper), Nolan, Elliott. Betty:' Mason (skipper), McLaren, Kennedy. .Evelyn: I. Gough (skipper), H. Gough, Ferguson.. All tho boats carried loading jibs, and on the gunfire the Otago. boat had tho weather position. Tho Botty aud tho Monica quickly set their spinnakers, and' wero noon followed by the other two boats. The Betty by this time had taken the lead at tho Ulva Island mark. The Betty took the weathor (position, followed by the Monica, the Irene, and tho Evelyn. On the run down to tho Dirty Island mark tho Ircno tried to gain the weather position, but, although successful in getting to the weather of tho Monica,,.sho found the Botty too hard a proposition. Mason was watching very carefully, and immediately luffed up towards the Canterbury boat's attack. Tho order round tho mark was: Betty, Monica, Irene, and Evelyn. Ten seconds separated the Otago and Wellington boats, while tho Irene was 2sec behind tho. Monica.. The Evelyn came 25scc behind the Canterbury craft. MONICA AND IRENE. • All the boats sailed on tho starboard lack until well in-shoro. Then the Irene and the Monica continued with a series of short boards. The Betty and tho Evelyn worked the open water. A .great fight, took place between -the Monica and the Irene. It was not long, however, before the Irene weathered the Monica, and both contrived to use •short boards up the coast. Canterbury's boat answered every move from the Monica. At the commencement of the second round tho Irene had 31 seconds on tho

| Monica, while the Betty was '5S seconds ibohind the leader. Tho Evelyn was J2min 15sec behind, the Irene. On the | lead to Ulva the Irene lost a good deal of ground, but sho rounded 21see ahead of tho Monica. The Botty was lmin 25scc, and tho Evelyn 3min lOsec after the leading boat. At tho weather mark tho order did not change. Tho Betty and the Monica worked short boards for a time. Then Wellington's boat stood out into tho open water.' Nearing the home mark, the Betty was tho first to go about to lay for the buoy, while the Monica followed. THIRD ROUND. j Tho commencement of the third i round found tho Monica 44sce behind i the Irene. The Betty followed 2min 'later. The lead to Ulva was without i incident, the Irene gaining slightly on jtho Monica, while the Betty lost someground. Rounding times were: Monica, limn; 1 Betty, 3inin SOscu. Tho run to tho weather flat showed i little difference, tho Monica picking up six seconds and the Botty 40scc on the leader. After rounding the mark on the final beat for home, tho Irene's ■ skipper was watching every move mado iby tho Monica; and McKenzic also employed every kind of device, but withlout success. Nearing the finishing line in the more sheltered waters, Wellington's skipper was going about in quick I succession and forcing Sinclair to do likewise. Eventually tho Irene went over the lino 23sec ahead. The times were as follows: —Irene, 2h 30min, 4h 33m 27, sec; Monica, 2h 30mm, 4h 33m 50s; Betty, 2h 30min, 4h 36m 445; Evelyn, 2h 36uiin, 4h 40m 18s. In the evening the commodore of the Stewart Island Yacht Club, Mr. T. Bragg, presented the cup to E. Sinclair, the skipper of Canterbury's crew.
