PLANTS FOR NEW ZEALAND

A large consignment of plants, bulbs, and seeds has been sent to New Zealand =by the members of the Surrey Women's Institutes who have "links" there to help in'the scheme to form "Gardens of Friendship" ronnd the Empire. Besides those from the gardens of members many owners of famous gardens made contributions. _ At the suggestion of H.B.H. the Princess Beatrice, plants of myrtles were sent grown from cuttings front Queen Victoria's wedding bouquet and from those of the Empress Frederick, the Duchess of Argyll, and all the queen's children. The Princess Koyal,> Princess Alice, the Conntess of Athlone, and the Dulte of Conriaught were among those who sent bulbs. Oak trees grown from the oak which the Prince Consort planted, on his first visit to OSborne House, lavender grown from cuttings from plants which he and the. Queen brought from Germany, and also, two trees from Kensington Palace, where . Queen Victoria/was Born/-and maidenhair. ; tree drown from a cutting from:one, planted by King Edward in the Dowager Countess of Warwick's "garden of friendship" at Easton Lodge were included. The Duchess of Northumberland sent black walnut and chestnut trees that were first raised by the late Duke of Alburv, and the Earl of Glasgow, Lord Islington, the Earl"of Banfurly, the Earl of Onslow, and Earl Jelhcoe sent SeThia is the Christmas gift from Surrey Women's Institutes to the Women's Institutes of New Zealand.
