COAL NET INVENTION
Mr John Alexander Brodie, formerly joint engineer o£ the £8,000,000 Mersey Tunnel, and, a man who completely altered the face of Liverpool during his 27 years a* city engineer, died recently at his home, Aigburth Hall, ■ Aigburth, aged 76. One of Ml. Brodie's claims was that he invented the goal net used in Association football. Among his.important works in Liverpool were: A share in the building of the Mersey Tunnel, and the creating of Queen's Drive—a roadway round the city and one of the finest boulevards in the world. AVhen motor-cars were a novelty he persuaded the then Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Mr. John Holding, to travel through- the streets in an open car, wearing his chain of office—a Bight that caused a, sensation. ■
