CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS

PLAY IN SENIOR GRADE

WG HITTING BY ELL AND WILSON

In perfect cricketing weather on Saturday afternoon the local senior championship matches provided much play of an exhilarating order. Not only were batsmen in fine ;form, but bowlers also •■ - registered good performances, and a general keenness in the field . made the cricket bright and highly entertaining. Wellington batsmen were in their element against Institute at Kclbuin Park, ■ Whyte, Foley, Ell, and Thomas all contributing heavily to a tall ' score'of 487 for four wickets. Ell, once he had become .settled, , smote the bowling severely, and 118 of his 158 runs were collected • -in 4's and 6's. Another dashing display was that by Wilson for Kilbirnie, and it was given throughout a period when ' Kilbirnie; ' were fighting hard to avoid defeat by Midland. Seven of Wilson s • ' big hits sent the ball over the boundary, and in addition to those 6's there were twenty-one 4's in his slashing 164. An extremely valuab.le innings for Kilbirnie was played by Christophersen— worth far more than the 81 runs it.yielded. There was an intensely exciting finish to the Petone-University match at Petonc. The home team required four runs from the last over of the day . for;an outright win. Two were still wanted with five balls of the over gone, and then to the amazement of the ,excited onlookers r and participants the umpire called "over.".. Hutt also went close to an outright win over Wellington College Old Boys at the Hull Recreation Ground. In these matches in the Hutt Valley the bowlers fared rather better than the batsmen, though Lamason, " Wareham, and Barclay did well with the bat1 for Old Boys. Of the bowlers who performed with credit on Saturday Smith (Petone), Ross (Hutt), and'O'Neill (Midland) registered noteworthy efforts.
