SEASON OPENS LYALL BAY CLUB Bright sunshine and light , southerly weather prevailed on Saturday for the ■ opening for the-season of the Lyall Bay Surf and Life-saving Club. A large number of members and friends contributed to the success of the function.. Among those present were representatives of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association, the Wellington Surf Section, the Wellington Swimming Centre, and the Maranui Club. In declaring the season officially open, Mr. K. Semplc, Ml., congratulated the club on the outstanding performances registered last year, and on the success generally of the past season. The splendid work that organisations of its kind were doing was not fully appreciated, he said. Nevertheless, the names* of the foremost clubs enjoyed a respect that was second to none. The beach accommodation was not of the best. He referred to the beauty of Wellington's marine drive, and to that of Evans Bay and ite adjacent playing fields. Ryan) defeated the A team (F. Mollier, G. Williams, A. Laurie, and J. Beck) by a narrow margin. _ ihe tug-of-war contest resulted in a wm for the A.team against the B team after a hard struggle. The surf race,provided the clo*»t contest of all. The course was from a point on the teach, round a buoy placed about 100 yards from the shore, and back to tne finishing line in front of the clubhouse. F Ryan and G. Williams rose from the water almost at once, but Ryan wae a good three yards in front when hegrossed the line. F. Mollier was a good .third. The B team won the'Tace and the opening day trophy.
