FEDERAL ELECTION

COMPLETE ANSWER

, TO MONETARY CRANKS

MINISTERS' VIEWS

Commenting briefly on the result of the Australian election, tho Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes) said today:—

"Tho-victory of the Lyons Government is.very encouraging as a recognition by the Australian people of the courageous way in which the Commonwealth Government faced tho difficulties of the depression, entailing a, programme of unpopular and drastic measures and' involving sacrifices by all sections, of the community. It is a tribute to the common sense of the Australian people tha*. they can distinguish between solid performance and illusory promises. Tho contest was between a Labour Party which was in office at tho- beginning of the depression and a Government that had to take over the unsolved problems from them. This makes tho result all the more significant, as it shows that the people;of Australia are determined to stand by stable and responsible Government."

The Minister of Finance (tho Et. lion. J. G. Coates) * also briefly commented on the result of the election, remarking that it appeared from the returns available that tho Australian people had given a complete answer lo the so-called monetary cranks who had been putting forward quack remedies. In common with the rest of. the.world, Australia had been passiiig through an entirely new sot of circumstances, and it was evident that the people of the Commonwealth appreciated what had been done by the Government to meet the position.

Mr. Coates was asked if he was yet in, a position to discuss the effect the election would have on the question of the importation of Australian fruit, but tho Minister replied that it was too early yet to go iiitothat aspect.
