The weather continued fine for the Wellington Trotting Club's Spring Meeting at Hutt Park today, and the stage was well set for a- successful opening to the light-harness season in this quarter of the Dominion. The fields that paraded were, not big, but they were well-balanced' and generally of a size to induce spirited betting and interesting racing. The track was in .excellent order after the recent settled spell and times W'oro fast, The attendance at tho-Park was very satisfactory early, and it kept improving during,'the progress pf the opening events. The betting • was under tho single-pool system, with three dividends in fields, of nine runners or over, and two dividends in fields of five, six, seven, or eight runners. Mataunga, Triangle, Harvest Dillon, and Margaret Parrish followed him for a round, but Triangle went up in the air half a mile from home. Mataunga and Harvest Dillon threw out challenges in the straight, but the leader was always clearly capable of frustrating the claims and he won by nearly threequarters of a. length from Mataunga., who beat Harvest Dillon by a long neck. There was then a. gap of eight lengths to Welcome Guy, Margaret Parrish, and Guy o' Mine. Sonoma King, Welcome Guy, and Guy o' Mine tangled at the start, and Triangle, Margaret Parrish, and Billy Sundy (badly) broke on the trip. O. Thomas), 9 Supertax 24 (J. Frascr),l Gamble 24 (M. B. Edwards), 3 Rewai 48 (J. Bryce, jun.), 8 Mabel Cliimes (P. R. Hogg). Gamble carried more than double the investments than any of the others in the Hutt Park Triarl Handicap, but he looked a possible winner only at- one point of the contest. iThe winner was the second favourite Insolvont, who had previously been in places but; had not earlier succeeded. Insolvent, a six-year-old grey son of Denver Huon, was smartest to begin, and he was alwaj ; s handily situated on the fence. At the end of two furlongs Full Hand ran to the lead and Native Son took over a furlong further on. Native Son led a bunched field thereafter, and was still in charge at the straight entrance from Pull Hand, Portlight (who had received a fine run up on the rail), Insolvent (moving out), and Rewai, but Insolvent then challenged along the outer of the leaders, and in a hotlyrcontested finish he won by half a' length from Full Hand, with Portlight a neck away third, with Zolock only • a head back fourth. The nearest of the others were Rewai and Silver Black. Gamble got but of the ( bunch going into the back the last'timo and put in a fast run to just behind the leaders, but he then began' to drift again.. Finally, nearing the straight, Supertax .fangled and Gamble put a, foot through-his sulky's wheel. , Times:.3min 34 I-ssec, 3min 34 3-ssec, omin 32sec .......

King). ,''"'■ War Buoy had no apparent difficulty in adding the. eighth win 'to his unbeaten record in the Bollard Memorial Handicap. He was in front at once and kept the pace slow for a couple of furlongs, but then Rey Spec ran up going through the straight and the rate was increased. War Buoy was leading Rey Spec by half a length on the next roun(| with William Tell just ..behind the leader on the rail so that Rey Spec was compelled to traverse a wider route 'than the others. Nearing the home stretch, War Buoy stepped oa the pace and he loft his opponents to and score as he liked' by a couple of lengths from Rey Spec, who beat William Tell by six or seven lengths.'- At a still wider gap was Worthy .King,, who had begun slowly, and thea. Harold Denver. The winner was at a very, short price on the totalisator. Times: '4mm 36 3-oscc, 4mm 37 3-ssec, 4min 40sec. (Winner trained by M. B. Edwards, Christchureh.) . The Mothven-trained Dollio Derby, an older half-sister to "War Buoy, who had not raced for over twelve months, was outsider at nearly double figures for the Kailway Handicap, and she was in front all the way. Attending her practically throughout was Young Travis and Compass, with Guy Junior and Plain Pearl next, but none of them succeeded in endangering her post over the closing stages. In the straight, she drew out: slightly, and then went on to score by nearly two lengths from Guy Junior, Plain Pearl, and Young Travis, who were separated only, by heads. Compass, who covered extra ground, was a moderate, fifth, and the favourite Coleno Parrish was next. Coleno Parrish did not begin well and was nearly half way through the race before she was going smoothly. Times: 3min 25 4-sscc, 3min 25 l-ssee, 3min 25sec. (AVinner trained by owner.)
