BUSY SOUTHAMPTON
CROWDED PORT
TREMENDOUS TONNAGE

(Received September 8, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, September 7. The Port'of Southampton is in the midst of one of the most crowded periods it has experienced in the past two or three years, and it is estimated that in the three days en'ding tomorrow the tonnage of shipping arriving and departing will total about 649,000. The vessels which are being handled include 27 liners. Tour arrivals and five'departures are of liners concluding or setting out on holiday cruises, and eight of the ships leaving port'are taking returning holidaymakers back to the United States and Canada. Some quick "turn-rpunds" are being made, notably that of the Empress of Britain, which arrived last evening, and leaves on Saturday, after being refuelled, revictualled, and cleaned up in 36 hours. The Andorra Star, which will have spent about the same time in port, and the Strathaird and the Espcrance Bay, which arrived today, will depart on cruises tomorrow. In addition to transocean services,, the port traffic is exceptionally' heavy at present ivith Channel steamer passengers, of whom an average of 3000 pass through the port daily.
