Tho Mayor of New York, Mr. la Guardia, proposes'to_ raise 12,000,000 dollars, a year by running municipal lotteries. ■" More than 1,000,000 people in New York are on the dole, and the civic expenses for July reached the record amount of 16,000,000 dollars. A national conference on the question of legalising lotteries has been called by prominent New York citizens, who point to the Postmaster-General's estimate that 2,000,000,000 dollars is sent from the United States every year for tickets in the Irish sweepstakes. .
