VALUELESS CHEQUE
MAN FINED £5
A plea of guilty to a charge of obtaining goods and money of a total value of •£5 from the Wairarapa Farmers' Cooperative Association, Masterton, by means of a valueless cheque was admitted by Keith Elford Craig, a labourer, aged 32, in the Magistrate's Court today, and Mr. W.'F. Stilwell,, S.M., fined him £5, in default one month's imprisonment. • Detective T. Y. Hall said that the accused was a scrap .metal dealer travelling around the country. Up to May 2he had an account with' the Union Bank of Australia, Palmerston North, but on that day the bank authorities, notified him that his account was overdrawn to tlie extent of £1 9s 3d., On June 12 he obtained a cheque over the counter from, the bank in Masterton, filled it in for £s,' and tendered it to the Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association in payment for lead. The lead cost £l,los and the accused received £3 10s in change. The accused was a hard-working man and was usually in employment. He had sufficient money to make restitution. From the dock, the accused said that the cashing of the cheque was an oversight. The Wairarapa Farmers' Cooperative Association had cashed cheques of his before. ' In imposing a fine, the Magistrate said that the circumstances. of the case were unusual. ' ■ ■'
