SALE. OF HIDES AND SKINS

At the fortnightly .sale o£ hides , and skins held.in Wellington yesterday competition was keen, and late values wore ■■on the whole fairly well' maintained' for "all sheepskins and in/many lots of hides. Smaller catalogues of shepskins than ..usual were submitted, sound, pelted skins being' keenly competed, for. ■ As compared with late rates prices were par to %d lower for the bet.ter grades, inferior and damaged skins being to %d lower. There was very little change in_. the values, of the few salteds offered. Yearling and kip', hides showed- some decline •in lighter weights, heavy' kip. remaining, firm at last .sale's figures; while calfskins were in better request at slightly higher prices. Cow hides', with" the exception of heavy weights, sold at prices ■ equal, to.last sale, heavier declining a halfpenny. Heavy ox were par to a farthing easier. There was-a better .demand for tallow; prices advancing 6d to Is per cwt.. The range of prices was as follows:—Dry sheepskins, halfbred 5%d to 6%d per lb, fine crossbred 4%d to 6%d, medium 3%d to SJ/id,5 J /id, coarse 2%d to half-wools 2'/4d to sd, quarter-Wools ,2Vid to 4%d; pelts Id to id; salted skins, halfwools 3s, three-quarter wools 3s lOcl; hides:. Ox, 331b to 441b 3 3-8 d to 3 5-Bd, 45-52 3Vid to 4 3-Bd, 53-59 3%d: to. 5%d, 60-69 4d to 6d, 701b .and over 5%d to 6 3-8 d; cow, 33-39 2%d to<3 7-Bd, 40-48 l%d to 3 7-Bd, 491b and over 3%d to 4d; kip, 2532 25-8 dto 4 5-Bd, 17-24 2d, to sd; yearling, 11-16 3d to 6d; calf, 9-10 3d to 6%d,'< 6-8 e'/sd to 8 3-Bd, 1-5 3%d to 7%.
