FOR NEED IN NAVY
FIRST CONVOY SLOOP
EMPIRE'S SEA DEFENCES
LONDON, September 3,
The "Daily Telegraph's" naval correspondent says that the Bittern, the ■Navy's first convoy sloojj, will shortly; be launched at Ciydebank.
She is designed to fill a dangerous gap in the Empire's sea defences. Owing to treaty restrictions Britain is short of modern cruisers.
The Bittern does not exceed 2000 tons, but carries two six-inch guns instead of two 4.7 in guns hitherto carried by the smaller sloops. Thus the Bittern should be able to engage any submarine.
If the typo is successful 25 or 30 may be added to tho Navy. They will be an invaluable reinforcement, and each cost' less than a destroyer.
