SPRING SEASON'S OPENING

HORSES IN LIKELY FORM

Fields for. the Marton ■ Jockey Club's Spring Meeting at 'Marton tomorrow are of', a size to induce keen betting, being not too large and not too small. The to'talisator will operate under the single pool, with three dividends when there are nine or more starters, arid two dividends when there are five, six, Seven, or eight starters. In most fields therefore there will be two dividends. This meeting will inaugurate .the 6pring season proper in the' Dominion, and a special, attraction will be the first two-year-old race of'the new term.'. The weather appears to be settled at present, and prospects. are for. a fine day and excellent going, firm without being too hard. ■-...-■ A brief review of the fields is as follows: — 12.0: JUVENILE PLATE, £00; 4 furlongs. Awapuni stables provide four of the field, and of them the. two fillies Symcony and Severe .appear to. be the most forward, though .the', high-priced' Legatee will, probably develop the best form later ' on. .The .Wanganiu aspirant Prevail has also been working along well. On the Ellerslie" parade Gay Sheik may yet be too green. Nothing is known about the remainder except their breeding. In this section are Gallant Knight, Tray Bit, Ecdeem, Overcast, Martianess. Hunting Queen, Inveresk, and Padnos; Gallant Knight, Redeem,, and Inyeresk being the only ones to have raced, as juveniles. .Gallant Knight showed promise last spring, and Redeem revealed speed in her few starts, but Inveresk was disappointing for one' of his breeding. Among the older candidates Count Roussillon has gone mine good races. A'favoured trio may-be Gallant Knight, Count Roussillon, ■ and the MartianessH anting Queen bracket. .1.20: OPEN HURDLES, £80; lVz miles. If Invictus has freshened up after his unsuccessful Ricearton trip he may be hardest to beat, as he is^ a sounder hurdler than the others. The Taranaki. winner liuariui, and Silent Bill (second), Kimwap (second to Invictus at Awapuni in July), and Anemometer are nil prospects. Two who may do best are Invictus and Silent' Bill. Hack Handicap.. One who appears well in at S.I in the recent Ricearton winner Timorous, who will be suited by the roomy course. Hest is; a muchimproved mare, with recent wins at Trentham and Hasting?, and 'Land Tax is a consistent mare who recently ran a good third in a big field at Awapuni. Rerepai was a two-year-old--winner.) but he has bee-n off the scene for some. time. Arena and Ethiop are another speedy pair trained on the track, and the latter particularly promises to have a successful season. Plateau goes well first up, arid he, too, is really good at his best. Blue Boy and Catalogue have had the benefit of a recent run, and Ida Merling may be likeliest of those who have been racing. Solarium was nn open mile winner at Avondale in the autumn, so that he. commands note. Host may be-.-better suited in "the sprint, but Hark Forrard,. Black Man, Spearform, Santoft, Ilukemanu,. .and.. Wyndale ..have ] all been winners' during the past two months'. Hark Fbrrard' raced poorly at Awapuni, but she is capable of better. Xow Spenrform is 'right she may go on with it, as she sticks-woll. King Thomond has lately shown prospects of recovering form, and Round Score may bleak his maiden status shortly over. a journey. Foreign Queen won this race last year, and she has a habit of building up a sequence when she starts' winning, as she recently did at 'Aw.ipuui, Rereatn w.'ifi a shade unlucky at Mariawatu, and limy just possibly make amends here. Pin Money has class to assist him if he is forward enough, which, nn he is a Paper Money, he may be. Good Hunting will require to improve on his latest efforts. Hunting Lodge 8 5 Wliyto Melylllo 7 11 Wasteland ... 8 2 Acrelict 7 5 Collodlan .... 8 0 Marsone .... 7 0 Ethiop 8 0 Relpar ..... 7 0 Wasteland is a speedy but rather unlucky mare engaged in the Farewell Handicap, and she will have to have fortune with her to account for the three thrce-year-olHs Collodian,' Ethiop, and Whyte Melville, all of whom have recently opened their winning account. Ethiop and Whyte Melville have class, but Collodian's tenlength win in the maiden at the Hawke's Bay Hunt was a performance that it is difficiilt yet to gauge in degree of merit. Hunting Lodge was a winner last week, and Marsong carried a lot of money at Xapier Park in June,-indicating private promise. One feels inclined to rely on the three-year-olds, Collodian, Whyte Melville, and Ethiop.
