RADIO CORPS FIELD DAY

NELSON, September 3,

Yesterday the local section of tho Radio Emergency Corps, under command of Section-leader R. Castles, took an active part in the national field day held in every centre in New Zealand. During tho activities twenty messages were handled at tho outpost station on Haulashoro Island, theso having boon relayed from tho base station in the city under control of Operator N. Burrell. Messages were originated at the outpost and sent over tho network to their destinations in. different parts of the country. The Nelson section during the tests was in touch all day with tho Blenheim section outpost, which was situated some miles from the town. The operators taking part were SectionLeader R. Castles, Operators L. Redshaw, D. Tout, R. Culpitt, D. Pharazyn, G. Gould, N. Burrell, and H. McLaren.

Customs duties, exciso beer duty, and sales tax collected at Port Nelson during August all showed an increase over the figures for tho corresponding month last year. Customs duties were £2310 2s Bd, against £2116 9s 8d last year; excise beer duty £1003 9s 4.d, against £620 11s 7d; and ' sales tax £1469 lls Gd, compared with £1387 IDs 6d.

During August 19 births, 29 deaths, and 4 marriages were registered in Nelson.

The Rev. J. H. MacKenzie, who was so well known in Nelson in formor years as minister of Trinity Presbyterian Church over a long period, is at p'resont on a visit to Nelson.

The Nelson Licensing Committco today passed a resolution deploring the death of Mr. T. Pettit, who was for many years a member of the committee, and placing on record its high appreciation of his many valuable services. Tho committee expressed its sympathy with the relatives.
