Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Kitchen, of Melbourne, are visiting Wellington. They arrived from the north on Thursday.

Mr. W. Simni, manager of the D.1.C., Wellington, will leave today by the Makura for Earotonga.

The death of Mr. H. Dixon, of the messenger staff at Parliament Buildings, occurred suddenly on Saturday evening just after lie had' returned home from work. He will be missed very much, by the other messengers at the building, as he was held in high. respect as a man of quiet nature and happy temperament.

The Rev. J. R. Blanchard left this morning by the Napier mail train for Gisborne, where he has been invited to participate in a Youth Church Rally; campaign.

• Dr. Eric Luke will leave for Dunedin this evening to attend the conference of the Australasian College of Surgeons.

Mr. P. J. O'Began leaves tonight for Dunedin where he will address a public mesting on the subject of-rating on the unimproved value. A poll on\the question of adopting the system is to b« taken there next Tuesday.

Mr. Barry Caulfleld, the noted English exponent of skiing, who has been under engagement to the Mount Cook Tourist Company for the past sis months, will leave New Zealand about the middle of September. During hii stay Mr. Caulfield has done much to advance the sport in New Zealand.

Lieutenant E.. E. Washbourn, of H.M.S. Diomede, has been awarded the Ronald Megaw Memorial Prize for 1932-33, offered annually to the sublieutenant obtaining highest place in the examination for lieutenant. This officer has already won the Goodenough Medal for gunnery. ■ He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. H. A:- E. Washbourn, of Nelson.

Mr. W. E. A. Gill, who is retiring from the managership for New Zealand of the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, was tendered a'dinner at th« Wellesley Chib by his fellow-members of the council of Tire, Accident, and Marine Underwriters' Associations oa Friday last. The president of the council, Mr! David E. Wilkie, proposing Mr. Gill's health,' congratulated him on the completion of 47 years of insurance service, for 28 of which he was the attorney in New Zealand for the Norwich Union Society. After the health of Mr. and Mrs. Gill had been drunk, a presentation was made on behalf of the members of the Underwriters' Council.

Mr. H. W. S. Pearce, who has acted as chief inspector in the Public Trust Office since the appointment in August, 1932, of Mr. A. E. Coad to the position of District Public Trustee, Wellington, has now been appointed chief inspector. He joined the staff of the Public Trust Office as a cadet in July, 1907, and during Ms period of service he has occupied responsible positions at head office and at district offices and has gained a thorough knowledge of all phases of the work. Mr. Pearce has been attached to the. inspectorial staff of the office almost continuously since July, 1920, being promoted to the position of assistant chief inspector in September, 1925. He is a qualified accountant by examination.

The Rev. N. R. Wood, who has been. minister of the Linwood Baptist Church, Chiistchurch, for nearly four years, and who lias accepted a call to the Petona Baptist Church, will begin his ministry; at Pctone in November, states tha "Press." Mr. Wood went to the Linwood Church from the Baptist College in Auckland. Since he took up his ministry in Linwood tho membership of thd church there has been nearly doubled. Mr. Wood has represented the Baptist denomination on the Social Council of the Churches and .on the Canterbury Council of Religious Education. He is president of the Canterbury . Baptist Sunday School Union, and assistant secretary of the Canterbury Auxiliary of the Baptist Union of New Zealand. His ministry at Linwood will be concluded on the last Sunday in October.
