YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCE

A charge of converting to_ his own use a motor-car valued at £100, th 3 property of Miriam Beryl Fairway, was denied by Morris Murphy, alias Maurice Courteczu, a cook, aged 10, in tho Magistrate's Court today, but Mr. E. Page, S.M., said ho could not accept tho accused's explanation and admitted him to probation for a period of two years. Mr. C. J. O'Regan appeared for the accused.

Sub-Inspector Roach said that the car was left in Victoria Street at about S p.m. on August 26, and at mid; night, when the owner returned for it', it was missing. The police were notified, and about 1.30 a.m. the car was seen by two constables being driven up Vivian Street. The constables gave chase in a taxi, and the ,car was stopped half-way up the Brooklyn hill. The a'ceused was driving, and ho was accompanied by two girls and another young man. His explanation was thai the car had been lent to him by a young man whom he did not know.

Giving evidence the accused said he was waiting to take a girl homo from a party, but ho did not have sufficient money for a taxi. A friend lent him the car and ho paid 2s for tho benzine.

To the Sub-Inspector ho said the car Was lent to him. outside the Communist Hall in Farish Street, and he was to return it to that spot.
