HARRIER TITLES

A AND XJ GRADE EVENTS

STRONG SCOTTISH TEAMS

PROSSER RUNS WELL

Weather conditions were very favourable and the track was in good condition for the Wellington provincial cross-country championship races at Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon. There was a record field in both the A and B grade events, and the times registered in each were much faster than had been anticipated. The A grade race was one of the most exciting contests witnessed in Wellington for some time, there being only three points between the first two teams. Throughout the race the individual title was in doubt, although G. Prosser (Brooklyn), the winner, did most of the pacing. He was followed closely by J. Riddington (Scottish),. C. Chalk (Wellington), and A. L. Stevens (Scottish), but had no difficulty in staving off their repeated challenges. The greatest surprise in this event was the outstanding performance of the young Wellington Club runner who ran into third position and finished in excellent condition. ■ RACE DESCRIBED. From the outset the Brooklyn and Scottish teams occupied the prominent positions, followed by a sprinkling of the Wellington and Olympic teams. However, most of the teams ran well together, as even the weaker clubs could be seen helping each other along in the ideal teaming style. The field remained well bunched round the foot of the Vosseler hill. On the hill D. Pedersen and G. Prosser (Brooklyn) were leading from Riddington (Scottish). 0. B. Roberts (Brooklyn), D. Woodley and A. Stevens (Scottish), R. Garnham (Olympic), M. Cooke and C. Chalk (Wellington) were all well up with the front markers and within easy striking distance of the pilot. After the hill had been negotiated, Prosser, Riddington, Woodley, and Stevens had a slight lead on the others, but not sufficient to ensure their finishing in that order. Chalk, Cooke, Barclay, and Garnham were running strongly and, with the exceptibn of Cooke improved their positions in the next mile. By this time it was evident that the teams' race was a, close one between the Scottish and Brooklyn Clubs. On the final stretch of road Riddington challenged Prosser, but the latter was too strong and drew away to win by about 50 yards. Chalk had by this time overhauled his opponents and finished 20 yards behind Riddington. THE RESULTS. The detailed results are as follows, the clubs being indicated by the Initials (B.)
