THE ENGLISH TROPHY

RETAINED BY AUCKLAND

(I3y Telegraph— L'ras Association.) AUCKLAND, September 1. The Auckland Association representatives retained l-ho Engljsh Trophy at Blanclt'ord Park today, when they defeated Canterbury under .splendid conditions by 3 gonls to .. ,In the early part of I/he game Canter-

bury were unable to settle down, but they improved towards the end of the second spell. In the secoad half the home side was awarded an extremely doubtful penalty kick from which they scored. This swayed the balance in the holders' favour. A remarkable feature of the game was the splendid support given the visitors, 90 per cent, of the large crowd appearing to favour the Canterbury side.

Halfway through the first spell Grant (Auckland) broke his leg, and the homo side played one short. The Canterbury forwards were all opportunists, the Auckland defence being .severely harassed on occasions. Auckland made the most, of its oll'rnsivc moves on the right, but Mitchell, the Canterbury goalkeeper, saved his side on numerous occasions.

Excitement was intense in tlie second spell, both sides pressing strongly. Canttrbury dominated play most of the time, bu(: the shooting ot' the forwards was not all that might be desired, and the advantage was lost. Auckland took the lead with a goal from a penalty kick, the referee's decision meeting with a storm of disapproval, but Canterbury, nettled, swept to .'the attack, and after a scries of attacks, evened the scores. lv the final stages Auckland put the decision beyond doubt when a free kick just outside the peualty area enabled Kay to score. The scorers for Auckland were Kay (2) and Jepson, and for Canterbury Smith and McMillan.
