The further advance "of 5%d in the price of gold to a new high record of Ills 5d took place today, the increase on yesterday's price being, based, on supply and demand and including a premium of 23 4d over the dollar at 4.99 7-8, aud 7d over the franc at 74 23-32. Sterling was slightly firmer on most of the principal centres today. The downward movement of the past few days lias caused, no anxiety in city financial circles, where there in a confident belief that it is mainly due to "bear" sales, and that covering of-'such operations will shortly produce a recovery in the rates. It is'- realised that no change has occurred in the economic situation of the country to warrant the depreciation.
