R.A.F. IN IRAK
NEW ZEALANDER RETURNS
An arrival from.Sydney by the Makura today was Flying-Officer W. E. Hooper, of New Plymouth, who has boon with the No. 70 Bombing Transport Squadron, Royal Air Force, in Irak,'for.the past eighteen'months. He will spend a.mouth in New Zealand with his relatives before proceeding to Eugland to undergo an instructor's course at the Central Flying School at Witter ing, near Stamford. ■ In conversation with a "Post" reporter Flying-Officer Hooper said that at the present time'there were three other New Zealanders in the No. 70 Squadron They . wore Flying-Officers M. R. D. Trewby (Mangaweka) ; M. F. Calder (Christehurch), and L. 8. Lamb (Wairarapa). The climatic conditions in Irak were quite congenial, and the general health of tho E.A.F. officers was good. Thcro were numerous facilities for sport which did much to make a stay in the country onjoyablo. At the present time Irak was quiet and had been so for some time. Last year, however, there had been some trouble in Northern Irak and the B.A.F. had been given tho duty of conveying about 800 Assyrian women and children down to Bagdad, a distauco of 200 miles.
