CRICKET SEASON

CLUB'S PREPARING

KILBIRNIE'S REPORT

■ With two championships to its credit, two other teams improving on their previous season's record, attendance at 'practice maintained up to the close of the season, and a great improvement in the financial position, the Jvilbirnio Cricket Club is able to present an excellent report for the annual meeting on Monday night. '■■ During the.past'four, seasons the club has won the senior championship twice, and has been ruriners-up ■ twice, but the report points out that whereas two years ago the championship was won on', averages,] last year it was .won by .the clear* margin, of seven points. Appreciative reference is made to the spirit in which the other teams who were in the -running right up to the last afternoon received the team's success. . . :

The other championship was won by the junior B2 team, which had been sixth on the list in the previous season. This success was also achieved iv the last match o£ the season',; iii.;which the team secured j an outright win after being compelled to follow on. The second grade team was little move successful thau it had been previously, but the junior Bl team improved its position by two places, while in contrast to :the position/iri the previous season when'the third grade team had been a source of anxiety, two third grade teams were, maintained, one of them finishing third in the competition and both of them fulfilling'their obligations throughout. The all-round strength of. the club is evidenced by the fact .that _it finished second in the club championship. r Thanks are expressed to Mr, J, .R. Christopher-sen, who at some personal sacrifice and with the loss of his own. practice to a large extent, undertook the ''coaching of gome of the most promising; of the younger players dm-ing the second half of the season.. Most of them profited by the coaching, and three of them each scored a century after Mr. Christophersen took them in hand. ,; Despite all the efforts of the committee, it was found impossible to come to any arrangement, with the City Council for the erection, of the practice nets/ and the time for practice was serio.usly, curtailed thereby. This matter is commended to the urgent attention-of the .incoming' committee. ' '.--,■■ '.■, ",

Starting the- season £65 in debt, the club was able; with the assistance of its supporters, a better payment of subscriptions, careful attention to . the material!, and two special efforts which received the wholehearted support of. the players, to pay all the current season's expenses and reduce its debt by some £38. ' .

Reference is also made to the increasing popularity of the tearoom, not. only amongst visiting, players but also by a growing number of spectators, several of .whom are regular patrons. Thanks are expressed to fcho ladies who .gave their time so willingly-to the making and dispensing p£ the tea, to Mr. L, Dumbleton, scorer for-the. first XL; Mr. ,\V. Toonier for his work on the score-board, to the patron, president, vice-presidents, and honorary members, to the custodian, .and, indeed, to all who in any way contributed to the success, of the club during the season. v '.■.::'.- "'■•••• ' ' '.;.■■ "'
