HOME PRODUCTION
MARKETING METHODS
TWO YEARS OF TARIFF AID
IMPROVEMENT NOTED
(British Official Wireless.) (Received August 31, 11' a.m.)
BUGBY, August 30
The review of the duties on certain horticultural products originally imposed in 1932 lias been completed by the Import Duties Advisory Committee, and the Treasury has issued an order for their continuance with slight modifications. In recommending tho duties in 1932 the Committee referred to the necessity for improved marketing, and, particularly, for organised assembling, grading, and packing, and stated that, subject to these and other considerations, it was not their intention to recommend any alteration in the general scheme of protection before the autumn of 1934.
As a result of their review the Committee now state that, while there is still much to be done, the industry as a whole has responded well to the call made on it. There is a general consensus of evidence as to the large increase in home production, and as to the advance made in marketing methods, and from no quarter has it been suggested that the prices generally have been affected to the detriment of the consumer.
In tiose circumstances they see no reason to recommend any reduction in tho measure of protection afforded by the existing duties, and proposals for changes arc limited to- a few cases in which they were satisfied that some further assistanco should be afforded immediately.
