RAMS SLAUGHTERED
FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION ?
ALLEGATION IN HOUSE
An allegation that' inferior mutton was being slaughtered in Masterton for human consumption was made in the Houso of Representatives last night. by Mr. R. Scmple (Labour, Wellington East), who contended that tho matter should be investigated immediately.
Mr. Semplo said that the question, of the sale of inferior meat in Wellington had been raised previously, but it had been denied. In the report of the amount of stock slaughtered at the Mastertou abattoir, as reported in the "Wairarapa Times" of August 22, it was stated that 305 rams had been included. As these had been slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs, it was evident that these rams were for human consumption, and were being sent to two or three butchers in Wellington. He remembered when old bulls used- to be killed and boned for osport. As a result trade had been lost, and some people wondered why. The meat used to turn, black after it had been placed in the freezer, and it was unfit for human consumption. Surely it was absolutely wrong that in a country which had a difficulty in disposing of its prime sheep rams should bo killed for consumption. It was not sent to Bellamy ,'s, but if it were there would bo protests about it, and perhaps the matter would bo investigated.
Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Government, Riccarton): I think you'are wrong. Mr. Semplo: I hope that I am, but strong evidence has been given to me, and I am placing it before the House. I want the matter thoroughly investigated. It is only right in the interests of the people that action should be taken. ■ • ' i ' .
