HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

A well-attended meeting of the general committee of the Wellington Horticultural Society was held on Tuesday evening. Mrs.' Knos Gilmer (president) and Mr; T. Waugh paid feeling tributes to the memory of Dr. L. Cockayne,, the society's botanist, and a motion of condolence was passed. . •■■•.,. Mr. -Herbert'J. Poole, secretary, of the National Dall'odil Society, was present, and preliminary arrangements were made foithe national daffodil show which is being held in conjunction with the Wellington Society's spring show on September 19 and 20. ■ , The president reported that the inauguration of Arbor Day had been a great success, and he conveyed a message of thanks to the society £rom the Wellington College Board of Governors. Mr. Waugh stated that the Governor-General's speech on Arbor Day had been an inspiration 'to all, and on his motion, seconded by Mr. Fox, the committee's appreciation of the president's invaluable assistance, resulting in the display of a wonderful public interest, was conveyed by a vote of acclamation. . . Judges were appointed for the Wellington Society's part of the spring show as follows:—Decorative, Miss Waugh; daffodils, Mr. T. S. Waugh; all' other classes, Mr. 15. Anstis. A daffodil circle was ararnged for Tuesday, September 11. The questions of the judges for the native garden competition and of city beautifieation were left over until-next meeting. ■ .
