PRICE OF PETROL

FIXATION DESIRED

.Thirteen petitions, representing 246 petitioners, were presented to Parliament yesterday asking that the Motor Spirits (Kegulation of Prices) Act be (brought into effect, and that the minimum retail price for the sale of potrol be fixed on the basis of a minimum profit of 3d per gallon to resellers. The petitions stated that by reason of the disturbed state of the petrol market, due to influences outside the control of the resellers, particularly the reselling of petrol by certain concerns as- an advertisement to attract other business, or at the dictation of wholesalers, or at uneconomic prices because of secret rebates or other advantage the retail profit or other fido petrol resellers did not provide the equivalent of a fair, economic wage.

It was also stated by the petitioners that the Government, by the passing of tho Motor Spirits (Regulation of Prices) Act during tho closing hours of last session had recognised that it was in tho public interest that there should be stability in the petrol market, but the Act had been nullified by the refusal of the Minister of Industries and Commerce to approve regulations and to fix prices of petrol.
