S; M. G. Simpson (G.P.O. Club) defeated H. Shanks (Wellington Working Men's Club) by the narrow margin of 300 to 285. Play was even until half-way, when Shanks drew ahead and needed; only 15' points to score with his opponent at 244. When apparently beaten, however, Simpson compiled it: particularly • good break of 56 unfinished which gave him the matell. Though defeated, • Shanks '•■ seems a certainty for the highfest break honours, as his brilliant 102 of an earlier game is still uneclipsedJ The best breaks last night were:—Simpson, 20, 54, 23,56 .(unfinished); Shanks, 22, 54, 29. The second game was between A, Dun.eaii (Y.M.C.A.)'and W. Peter^en (Working Men's Club). Duncan, with consistent billiards, proved an easy winner by 300 to 116. Petersen, who in this tournament lias displayed quite good billiards, failed '.through a bad run- on this occasion' and did' not "look dangerous.
