IMMIGRATION LAW
PERMIT AND POLL-TAX
■ In. the ■House of Representatives this afternoon Mr. W. E. Barnard (Labour, Napier) gave notice.to ask the Minister of Customs whether ho would' take steps to have the immigration restriction law consolidated and brought up to date. - '
Mr. Barnard said that one illustration .of the need for overhauling the immigration law was provided by the present main Act, passed 26 years ago, which still imposed a poll-tax on Chinese, though for many years past restriction of the entrance of all foreigners (including Chinese) had been effectively covered by the permit system.
