INCREASED SALARIES

WHAT LEGISLATORS WILL

RECEIVE

As the result of .the increase of v per. cent, in the wages and salaries .of civil servants and "others charged on tho Budget" the Prime Minister will receive an annual salary of £ 1445, representing an increase of £6S a year. Each Minister of the Crown will receive an annual increment of £45, bringing his salary up to £940.

Before the first cut. was . imposed under the Public Expenditure Adjustment Act, 1921-22, the Prime Minister received a salary of. £2000 a year and Ministers £1300. Under that.Act a cut of 10 per cent, was imposed and further cuts imposed in April, 1931, and April, 1932, the three cuts made reducing tho Prime Minister's salary to £1377 and Ministers' salaries to £595. .

Under the Civil List Act, 1920, the salaries of members of Parliament were fixed at £500 a year, but they, too, suffered cuts until in April, 1932, they found thetnselves with £364 10s a year. The 5 per cent, increase brings the amount to £382 14s 6d.

Legislative Councillors will have their salaries increased from. £255 to £208. In 1920 they were receiving £350 a year.

Although the Budget made it clear that an increase of .5 per cent, was being made in tho salaries of civil servants and others charged on the Budget, there appears to be considerable misapprehension in the minds of the public as to tho exact nature of tho alteration. It is thought by some people that the Government has restored some portion of the cuts, and although this in effect is the result, what the Government has really done is to increase salaries by 5 per cent.
